What do we need to do to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat ?
1. sign up on our calendar (instructions below)
2. set up the Kiddush (wine, challah, snacks)
3. clean up
What do we bring for the Kiddush ?
Challah (available at Shaw's)
Kosher Wine (small bottle, available at Shaw's)
Grape Juice (small bottle)
Finger Foods ( dessert or bakery items, crackers and cheese, fruit, vegetables, etc. enough for 15 - 20)
bottled water or lemonade or juice. Please avoid soda.
1/2 and 1/2 for coffee
How do we set up, where is everything?
All you need is in the kitchen. Etz Hayim has labeled cabinets. There
are paper plates, plastic ware, cups and napkins. The Challah plate and
cover are on the bottom shelf of the cabinet to the right of the sink.
Serving trays are to right of sink in lower cabinet. If you use it, you need to wash it and put it back when done.
How do we make coffee ?
Plug in the coffee maker. It takes about 10 minutes to heat up. There is already water in the tank, don't pour any in yet.
Coffee filters are in the cabinet above.
Put 1 into the filter basket and add 1 rounded tablespoon of coffee for each cup.
Slide the filter basket into the coffee maker.
Place the coffee pot on the warmer under the filter basket.
Use other pot to pour water through.
Coffee can be left on burner for a bit (turn heat on to keep it warm. Switches for three burners well labeled).
If a second pot is to be made, pour coffee into one of the plunger thermos containers.
Having just two pots, fill second pot with water to measure proper
amount and then pour it into a pitcher. Place the pot under the
filter. Then pour water through. Be sure that green light
has come on again.
Hot water for tea?
We have two options.
The large water warmer for large groups. Fill to desired level, plug in and turn on.
The glass water boiler on counter to left of sink. Push button on
handle up to turn on. This has automatic shut off and takes about 5
minutes to boil a full pot. There are carafes for hot water above
stove to keep water hot. But this can be turned on during Kiddush
as it boils quickly. Empty and leave open on base. No soap
is used on this. Occasionally it will be cleaned with dilute
vinegar.
Serving
Place Hot water, Caf and Decaf labels in front of each thermos.
Put out container of stirrers, spoons and sweetener
Put out some sort of creamer. Check date first. If it is close, taste it first. Use small cream pitcher.
If
you are finished making coffee unplug the machine. Remove the
filter basket and empty the used grounds into the trash, rinse and
replace the filter basket.
What needs to be done for cleanup?
Any left over wine can go in the refrigerator. Any left over food either goes home with you or is thrown away.
We recycle so please rinse cans, glass and plastic and put them in the blue recycling bin.
Please empty all the trash barrels and take the trash to the trash bay in driveway. Trash bags are under the sink.
The trash bins are marked for trash and recyclables.
Please vacuum the area. The vacuum is in the Janitor’s closet next to the kitchen.
Wipe down any tables that were used.
Clean the coffee pots, they can just be rinsed with hot water.
It sounds like a lot but only takes about 10 or 15 minutes.
Is it different for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ?
Yes!
In addition to the list above, you should supply the paper goods and
plastic ware. You should also bring the coffee and creamer.
