TIKKUN OLAM: A PLACE FOR REPAIRING THE WORLD
A Place To offer a Helping Hand: Etz
Hayim helps its own members, joins with others to aid the needy in our
community, raises awareness and aid for Israel, and provides support
for national and international causes as part of our work for Tikkun
Olam, to repair the world. We have many blessings, and this is
one way to give a blessing in return.
Yom Kippur Collections: The Yom
Kippur prayers teach that Tzedakah is one way to “avert the evil
decree” so we organize various Tzedakah projects to coincide with the
High Holy Days. Recent examples include collections of winter
coats to be delivered to shelters, raising funds on behalf of refugees
in Darfur, supporting the rebuilding of the Jewish community in
Argentina and supporting various projects in Israel.
Confirmation Class and Youth Group Projects:
Our youth regularly sponsor projects. The Youth group
participates in regional NFTY Social Action weekends. The
Confirmation Class projects have included sponsoring a Blood Drive,
making and selling jewelry to raise funds to support refugees in Darfur
or food kitchens in Israel or shelters in New Hampshire.
Etz Hayim Supports MAZON: A JEWISH RESPONSE
TO HUNGER: As a MAZON partner Etz Hayim makes sure that every
Bar/Bat Mitzvah family is encouraged to donate to MAZON. For the
High Holy Days and for Passover we distribute information about MAZON
and encourage families to donate.
Support the William Einhorn Interfaith
Education Fund: This fund, created in memory of Wiliam Einhorn,
who died in February, 2007, will be used to fund an annual program for
interfaith education. Wiliam Einhorn took part in many formal and
informal discussion with members of Etz Hayim Synagogue and the Church
of the Transfiguration where we share space. This fund will
assure the continuance of those dialogues. Donations can be made
to: Etz Hayim Synagogue – William Einhorn Fund, P O Box 1600, Derry, NH
