Havdallah Service and Game Night

Happy Havdallah Happening

On Saturday evening, January 11, 2014, a group of approximately 30 members of the Etz Hayim community gathered for a Havdallah service led by Rabbi Bryna Milkow and lay cantor, Al Sandler.  Following the brief service, complete with stories told by the Rabbi and Steve Soreff, Vice President, a pot luck supper was enjoyed by all. The evening continued with folks engaging in fellowship and a variety of games including, but not limited to, Mexican Train, Things, Scrabble and cards. The Patriots were playing on the big screen with a wonderful evening enjoyed by all! Thank you to the Membership Committee for organizing this. If you weren’t able to make it this time, watch for the next event and please join us!!!

Donation Apple Tree

apple tree
Have you seen the "Apple Tree?"  From Rosh Hashanah through Sukkot, apples represent the sweetness of the new year and a symbol of the harvest festival, particularly here in New Hampshire.  As abundant as apples are this time of year, so are the expenses of running our synagogue.  You will see that each apple represents an item of expense - anywhere from a $10 box of coloring pencils to a $600 PSNH bill to an $8,000 mortgage payment.  Simply pick an apple and write your name on the corresponding log out sheet and send a check for your item to Etz Hayim Synagogue, 1-1/2 Hood Road, Derry, NH  03038, and clearly identify the name of your item.  Your family will then be acknowledged in our upcoming Newsletter(s).
We are so grateful to those who have already chosen their apples.  The tree will remain in the lobby through the end of September, so there is "apple" opportunity to still participate.  For those of you unable to get to the synagogue before the end of the month, you can choose your item from the attached lists of Apple Tree items and send your check to the synagogue clearly identifying the name of your item

Elijah's Table Yard Sale a Double Mitzvah

Double Mitzvah Yard Sale Turns into Double Fun Event.

The Elijah’s Table yard sale (which took place on Sunday, August 4, in front of the Synagogue) was a huge success.  We made over $1,000, which will be used to help fund a year of free community meals.  The yard sale also provided a wonderful opportunity for our young volunteers (confirmands Jessica Sandler, Jared and Orianna Kane, and Samuel Lynn, and recent Bar Mitzvah Santino Cerino) to do good work for the community; indeed, helping to make the yard sale successful was Santino’s Bar Mitzvah project.  On top of it all, the yard sale was great fun.

Given our noble purpose, perhaps it should come as no surprise that good forces seemed to operate in our favor throughout the day.  Despite early accounts of bad weather, it did not start to rain until we had completely cleaned up.  A road detour led cars right by the Synagogue throughout the yard sale! And, on top of it all, Rabbi and Connie Rieser showed up out of the blue – maybe they were diverted to the Synagogue too.

Thanks to everyone who contributed items to the sale, and to Rabbi Milkow and President Sarah Finne Sandler for supporting the project.  And special thanks to the folks who, along with our wonderful teens, helped to run the show:  Richard and Linda Rosenberg, Arlene and Jonathan Kane, David Riese, Karen Patterson, Craig and Jen Cerino, and Dina Michael Chaitowitz.

We have a fantastic Synagogue!

Red Sox Raffle Winner

posted Aug 6, 2013, 9:25 AM by Etz Hayim Synagogue

Congratulations to Steve Sussman, this year's winner of the Red Sox/Yankees raffle!! Steve wins two front row seats to the Red Sox/Yankees game on August 18 along with two free passes to the new Royal Rooters Club. The winning ticket was sold by Nick Jay, son of Robert and Kerry Jay. For selling the winning ticket, Nick receives a $25 gift card to T-Bones!
Renae Whissel (niece of Ted and Laurie Medrek) pulling the winning ticket
Sound familiar?  Ironically, Nick sold the winning ticket to Steve Sussman last year as well!

And no one has yet been able to beat Roy Aboody who sold 67 tickets. Roy also wins a $25 gift card to his favorite restaurant for being our best salesman!

Many thanks again to the Saren family for donating the Sox/Yankees tickets!  We are also grateful to all participants (sellers and buyers alike) who helped us raise $4,000!

Please feel free to forward this email to those who participated in this raffle and pass on our warmest thanks for helping to make this another successful fundraiser.
